After the death of his father in 1819 he went to Copenhagen to become a actor. But as it does not not work he tried to become a singer and he also wrote his first poems. Finally Jonas Collin, the director of the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen (Det Kongelige Teater), take in charge of him. From 1822 to 1828 he visited different Latin schools and following the University in Copenhagen. He became famous for writing fairy tales. He died in 1875 in Copenhagen. Today he is one of the most famous Danes. The manuscripts and correspondence of Hans Christian Andersen are since 1997 a part of the Memory of the World Programme of the UNESCO.

Lyrics:
You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixon,
Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen,
But do you recall
The most famous reindeer of all?
Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer
Had a very shiny nose
And if you ever saw it
You would even say it glows
All of the other reindeer
Used to laugh and call him names
They never let poor Rudi
Join in any reindeer games
Then one foggy Christmas eve
Santa came to say:
"Rudolph with your nose so bright
Won't you guide my sleigh tonight?"
Then all the reindeer loved him
As they shouted out with glee
Rudi the red-nosed reindeer
You'll go down in history
